If you've managed to get to this page, you probably know a little something about my music. But then again.... maybe not. Well, I've been a keyboard player all my life, starting on piano and organ at an early age. In my teen years, when everyone else was playing rock and roll, I was a nut for jazz and bebop music. I loved the music of great pianists like Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and organist Jimmy Smith. Then, at the age of 19, I made the big move from Sacramento, CA to Los Angeles, where I was determined to make my way in the nutty business of music. I soon found that being a jazz musician didn't pay the bills so well (at leasts at my level), so I did what most young musicians do - go out and get a gig! I started with top-40 bands and weddings, and slowly found my way into a few small studios, where I found my real passion in the music business. I loved being able to create music in the studio, and also realized I went nuts for the new emerging technology of MIDI and computer music recording (it was, after all, the mid '80s - check out the hair!). This led to doing my first 3 albums for a small LA-based label, TBA records. The three albums were "Quiet Time", "Searching the Heart", and "Tim Heintz". The last one featured the song "Dear Jacqui" which remains a classic song still in rotation on Smooth Jazz stations around the world!
Of course, like I said, being a jazz musician doesn't pay the bills so well, so I had to work other places as well. Through my studio work, I made friends who reccommended me for some really cool gigs. In the late '80s I was lucky enough to tour with 2 of the greatest singers of all time, who happened to be my favorites - Chaka Khan and Michael McDonald. It was a real treat getting to work with them night after night, and play all those great songs. It was great getting to travel all over the world as well - Japan, Europe, and the good 'ol USA of course. I've also toured with Boz Scaggs, John Tesh and others.
In the early 90's, I transitioned from touring, to concentrating more on my studio work. I made 2 solo CDs for a Japanese company, "Angel Coast" and "Summer Rain". Although they didn't see the light of day in the US, they have some of my favorite tracks on them. Around that time, I started working with producer Randy Jackson (yes, the American Idol judge), and did lots of CDs for a few years. The most popular one was the solo release by Dionne Farris which had the hit "I Know". I also worked a lot with John Tesh, writing, arranging and playing on many of his "project" CDs. Other smooth jazz artists I have worked with in the last decade are Tom Scott, George Benson, Boney James, Bob James, and Paul Brown. I will be posting a full discography soon.
I've also co-written many songs for artists. Some of my favorites are "That's the Beat of a Heart" (from "Where the Heart Is"), theme to "Brandy and Mr Whiskers" (Disney TV), and "Running Out of Time" (LeeAnn Rimes on the "Desperate Housewives" soundtrack). I've also written for movie soundtracks, including "Enemy of the State", "Gone in 60 Seconds", "Deep Blue Sea", "One Hour Photo", and "Bad Boys II".
The last couple of years I've been busy with music for commercials and theme parks. It keeps me very busy, and it's a huge variety of styles - ranging from orchestral to electronica. I enjoy the challenge every day. | ||||||
